Scientific Studies Offer Hope To IVF Patients And Couples With Unexplained Fertility Problems

A study by an international team of researchers published in the journal Science in August 2011 has found that it is the "sticky" egg that catches the sperm. The international research team said that their discovery should help couples who suffer from infertility problems in the future.
The study found that there is a particular type of sugar molecule the makes the outer coat of the egg "sticky," helping the egg and sperm bind together.
In London, Imperial College's Anne Dell stated that there is a big gap in fertility knowledge which has been filled by the study. Anne Dell and the rest of the research team are hopeful that ultimately the research findings should help people who cannot conceive. Dell collaborated with scientists from the universities of Missouri and Hong Kong, and the Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
Currently in Britain it is estimated that 1 out of every 7 couples has problems when it comes to conceiving a baby which happens for a range of reasons, however many of these reasons up to now have not been explained by medical science. Around the world it is estimated by the WHO (World Health Organisation) that up to 15% of couples of reproductive age are affected by fertility problems.
Before this latest study scientists knew that an egg is recognised by the sperm when proteins on the sperm make a match with a series of specific sugars in the outer coating of the egg. It is by this match being made successfully that then the egg and sperm will bind together and the sperm delivers its DNA to the inside fertilising the egg.
The study identified the sugar chain which is now known as the sialyl-lewis-x sequence (SLeX). Laboratory experiments with a variety of synthesised sugars confirmed that it is SLeX which binds the sperm to the egg.
The lead author of the research study, Poh-Choo Pang said that although clinical treatments are still a way off, the study has opened up new possibilities for addressing and understanding fertility problems faced by many couples. The team are excited by the new research and are looking forward to building on their work.
Egg Meets Sperm: The Female Side of the Story
The findings of another study: Egg Meets Sperm: The Female Side of the Story was published in October 2010. A research team from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet, led by Luca Jovine, which collaborated with Prof. Tsukasa Matsuda at Nagoya University, Japan, and Dr. David Flot at the ESRF discovered the 3D structure of the egg's receptor molecule that binds the sperm, called ZP3.
Luca Jovine said: "The results give a remarkable picture of the female side of fertilisation, but this is, of course, only half of the story. The next step will be to tackle the corresponding molecules on sperm that allow it to bind to the egg."
Therefore from the "sticky" egg study we know that the sperm recognises the egg when certain proteins on the head of the sperm meet and match a series of specific sugar in the egg's outer coating. From the Luca Jovine led study we know that the egg has this 3D receptor molecule, called the ZP3. Yet there is another study which has made an important breakthrough on sperm DNA integrity.
Sperm DNA Integrity
In 2010 researchers in Yale School of Medicine discovered a method to choose the spermatozoa (sperm) with the highest DNA integrity. In the natural fertilisation process the oocyte (egg) is responsible for choosing the best quality sperm.
However during IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) treatment clinicians could not be sure if they were injecting the best sperm into the egg for fertilisation. Previous semen analysis had focused on the sperm concentration and mobility, which was based on the assumption that if a man has a high sperm count and active sperm that he was fertile.
Yet this approach did not take into consideration the sperm's ability to attach to the female gamete (egg, ovum). Gabor Huszar, M.D., director of the Sperm Physiology Lab, who was the senior author of the study said: "We have now found a biochemical marker of sperm fertility so that we can select sperm with high genetic integrity,"
Huszar and his team tested the concept that binding sperm to hyaluronic acid will select that sperm with high DNA integrity. Huszar's conclusion is that the sperm which is selected by the hyaluronic acid binding is of comparable if not better quality that the sperm which the oocyte chooses during the natural fertilisation process.
He also likens sperm which has fragmented DNA to scratched CDs. They seem to be operational but when you play the CDs some information is missing. In the same way damaged sperm can be carrying chromosomal aberrations which may relate to genetic diseases.
These studies featured in this article are only a sample of the many fascinating studies around the topic of fertility. These scientific studies are remarkable and whether it is the potential improvements in IVF or a better understanding of the natural fertilisation process, we can be grateful to the scientists for their work which will no doubt help couples conceive over the coming years.
These scientific studies as well as other important relevant studies not featured in this article, offer increased hope to IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) patients and couples with previously medically unexplained fertility problems.

Every Child Is Special: A Movie Review

Every Child Is Special is probably my first Bollywood movie. (I do not count Slumdog Millionaire because I have watched it only in parts and have not even gotten to the ending, haha.) Anyway, Every Child Is Special is a Hindi drama film released in 2007 (Taare Zameen Par, translation: Stars On Earth) produced and directed by Aamir Khan. It tells about a boy, Ishaan Awasthi, who was always getting in trouble at school for being so misbehaving and out of focus from his lessons. Too often, he would be caught by his teacher daydreaming and getting low grades. Because of this, his father sent him to boarding school, all alone and homesick with the hope of disciplining him. But the academic status of Ishaan did still not improve. Instead, he became withdrawn and lonely, far from the Ishaan who was active and fun-loving. Then came a new art teacher who would just change the way Ishaan would act towards school and learn to appreciate himself even more.
How can I not love this movie? Darsheel Safary is perfect for the role of Ishaan Awasthi. Safary, with his innocent eyes and face, made me laugh with his funny antics and at the same time rend my heart as he goes through the agony of enduring boarding school alone and away from his parents. From start to finish, the movie gripped my attention, and the musical portions added to my fascination. I cannot speak about the technical aspects of film-making as I am not knowledgeable of such, but for an easy to please movie fan like me, Every Child Is Special is one heart-touching movie.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Every Child Is Special is an eye opener as to the worth and significance of every child. The story deals with an issue that is as real as it is unrecognized - dyslexia. I first knew about dyslexia in the book, Pearl Harbor by Randall Wallace, but the movie has increased my education on this kind of ailment.
Every Child Is Special is a movie that can tug the heartstrings and at the same time bring hope that having dyslexia is not a desperate situation. Family support, patience, and love are central themes in this story, plus the primary focus on painting and art. The theory on multiple intelligences in education plays a major role in this movie and can be very informative to teachers and parents alike.
I really love this movie and I highly recommend this to everyone. My sister has also been nagging me to watch The Three Idiots. Maybe, tonight.

Judgment Debtors With Common Names And Socials

I am not a lawyer, I am a judgment referral expert (Judgment Broker). This article is based on my experience in California. Laws vary in each state, and nothing in any of my articles should ever be considered legal advice. This article is my opinion about how to work around the problem of debtors having common names, or using the same names or Social Security Numbers of their parents, grandparents, or kids.
When a kid is named Barry Clark and his father is also named Barry Clark and his grandfather is named Barry Clark; it is perhaps cute, perhaps sentimental, and perhaps it can make it more difficult for creditors to collect from the right Barry Clark. It is too bad that dates of birth, and at least partial Social Security Numbers are not put on most judgments by courts.
Some debtors use a relative's Social Security Number, or one from an unrelated person, to evade creditors. Even if your debtor is a "scammer" and uses someone else's or multiple Social Security numbers, there is not much you can do about it.
In theory, intentionally using someone else's or multiple Social Security Numbers (SSNs) is illegal. However, in real life - unless one uses multiple SSNs to defraud the government, a big business, or a VIP - law enforcement rarely does anything to the average person who uses fake SSNs - or even those who commit perjury.
Making threats is illegal. One cannot threaten, or threaten to notify others, for example the police or the IRS, for the purpose of getting a judgment paid.
There are many laws that restrict disclosing information about a debtor's debt to third parties. What happens when you have a judgment debtor whose name is the same as his father's name? If you mail them a letter or anything else, how do you know the right person will open it? If you call them to negotiate a payment plan, how do you know you are talking to the right person?
This same-named debtor problem occurs fairly often. If you know the age of the debtor, perhaps their middle name is different. When you call or write, use their middle name, or use Jr. or Sr. If they ask why you want to talk to the debtor, say it is a business transaction.
If the debtor says they are the right person (the person named on the judgment), make sure they sound "right", a 22-year old should sound different than a 50-year old. If you are sure you are speaking to the right person, recite the "Mini-Miranda", and ask them how they plan to repay this judgment debt.
Google "Mini Miranda". When speaking with the debtor, you need to recite the Mini Miranda to them. Also include the Mini Miranda (and in California, the Rosenthal Act) on your first written correspondence to the judgment debtor (for example a payment plan agreement letter).
Then, prepare to hear lies, including what a SOB the original judgment creditor was, how they were not served, how they are poor, and be sad, mad, etc. There is a 10% chance they will offer to pay you, and a 2% chance they will really pay you as they promised.
If you call a judgment debtor, never lie about who you are, and do not let them believe you are associated with any entity that you are not part of. It is ok to tell them you are an investigator with your own company. Tell them that you are trying to contact (debtor's name).
You can proceed with your investigative call by saying "we need to confirm that we are speaking with the correct individual, can I kindly ask you for your year of birth?" As a first step, you are just trying to confirm that you have the correct individual.
Once you have confirmed that you are speaking with the correct debtor, try being nice and working with them on a payment plan. You might say they qualify for a voluntary payment plan instead of normal enforcement procedures.

Steve Jobs Resignation Should Prompt an Early Official Announcement of the Apple iPhone 5

Apple's Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs has just resigned from his post, due to an undisclosed health issue. Although this may be bad news for some, this might prompt an early official announcement of the Apple iPhone 5. We may see the mooted smartphone earlier than expected.
The former CEO stepped down on August 24, a Wednesday. This is an indication that the former house of Jobs will be holding an even in the coming week to possibly officially announce their new handset. This may not affect the company's strategy. However, it may affect the consumer's perception of Apple's products.
To remedy the bad news of Jobs' resignation, the now house of Cook may announce good news as soon as possible. Diverting the attention to bad news by releasing something people are looking forward to is typical PR strategy. They are most likely to make the bad news dissipate during the weekend. Early next week, expect breaking news to roll out from the press. When good news comes to mind, we can't think of anything else but an announcement of the 5th generation iOS-powered handset.
The former Chief Executive Officer has been on sick leave since the start of the year. It is highly possible that Jobs wanted to release news of his resignation earlier. However, Job's PR team may have advised him to hold off until the imminent launch of the Apple iPhone 5. It could be part of the strategy to make the mooted phone the CEO's last hurrah.
If we go back to past products, Steve Jobs has always taken center stage. Despite pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant, he has always been hands-on in product presentations such as the iPad 2. It wouldn't be surprising if we see the now chairman of the Cupertino firm take center stage again to introduce the new Apple iPhone 5.
Looking at another angle, we might see Tim Cook taking center stage to introduce the new smartphone. This may also be part of the strategy to debut the company's new Chief Executive Officer. This may be an attempt to show that Cook is more than capable of his new responsibilities.
Regardless of the theories and strategies involved, the bottom line is we may finally see the most highly anticipated handset the world has ever seen. Whether Chairman Steve Jobs or CEO Tim Cook takes the spotlight, we will finally get our hands on the Apple iPhone 5 soon.

Why Do I Have Slow Metabolism After Delivery

What are main reasons for slow metabolism after delivery? This question often bothers those who have just given birth to a new baby. It is quite common to see mothers rushing out and calling up exercise and weight control firms asking for ways and means to put back the body in shape after the delivery. Many mothers are jittery about losing their beauty and attraction once they give birth to a baby. They think that the whole process of delivering a baby involves putting on excess weight from which it is difficult to come back. This is just an opinion and not based on facts. The fact of the matter is that a woman can come back to her original shape and attraction just by following some common tips that are simple to follow though not exactly very easy.
It is a known fact that pregnancy and delivery is a complicated process. During this process it is quite normal to see a lot of changes in the hormonal levels. The main function of these hormones is to help the whole process of pregnancy to go smoothly. Hence it is quite common to see a surge in hormone levels during pregnancy. It is also quite common to see pregnant mother always being in a state of hunger during pregnancy. This is essentially because of the increased levels of certain hormones which increase appetite. This is quite natural because the pregnant mother has also to take care of the unborn child and see that it gets the right share of food and nutrients.
However, once the pregnancy is over it is quite natural that the hormone levels fall down and that could be the reason why there is slow metabolism after delivery. Many women experience different types of problems once they are through with the process of delivery. Many women go into a state of depression because of hormonal imbalances and this triggers a chain of reaction which eventually affects the metabolism process and at times causes slow metabolism after delivery.
There could be quite a few reasons behind slow metabolism after delivery after delivery and it could vary from person to person. Hence, it would be better to check out with the doctor if you find a woman putting in extra weight after delivery. Further, there are some woman who do not breast feed their child after delivery thinking that it contributes to lower metabolism, while in fact it is exactly opposite. Breast feeding in fact helps the metabolism process.
However, eating fat burning foods makes all the difference between staying overweight or losing those extra pounds. If you eat four meals every day, but each day you eat different food and you get exercise plan which anyone can do, you can look the way you really want to. The best part, your metabolism does not even know you are on diet, and you still lose weight. People, who are skeptic, can even get a free metabolism booster guide and see how it works for them.
